......it would be Plitvice Lakes National Park! Here's the story. It is a huge, lush valley with 16 terraced lakes. It is separated by natural travertine dams and laced together by waterfalls, boat rides and rather sketchy looking but solid boardwalks. The lakes are crystal clear, deep and full of trout. The limestone seems to be a natural filter for the water.
In spite of the fact that is is one of Europe's most spectacular natural wonders, the first casualty of the 1991 Homeland War was a park policeman. Indeed, for five years there were no visitors which allowed the National Park to 'heal'. It has been carefully curated every since with about 1 million visitors each year.
FUN FACT: Best conversation so far: When we returned from Plitvice Lakes National Park to our Airbnb, 'grandma' was there to greet us. She was holding a whole plate of homemade cheese! As she gave it to us, we asked her if she had made the cheese. "No", she said, "a cow........."
| Several miles of these rustic plank walkways. No guard rails, definitely not handicapped approved. Wouldn't fly in the US of A, |
